Local Dealer's New Ammo Sales Policy

Last wee, my pops stopped into our local gun dealer to pick up a single shot hunting pistol that he had on consignment at the shop. The dealer had no ammo on the shelves (xcept for odd ball stuff and hi powered hunting rounds). No 9mm, no .380, no .223, no standard shotgun shell, no .40 SW, you get the point.

He did have the stuff though. His new ammo sales policy is "you want to buy ammo from me, you gotta buy a gun first".

Not sure how long he will keep this policy up.

I can't really blame him. Ammunition buying has become cut-throat. Walmart employees report that people are showing up at 7 am when the semis deliver their goods and the pallets of ammunition are being bought right off the truck.

Sounds like hyperbole to me. Unless a trucker or dockworker is doing it on their own. But then I don't think uncle Wally would approve of employees stealing/skimming the merchandise. All real Wallyworld sales have to go through a POS register. Now I could see people lining up at the ammo counter at 7AM waiting for them to start unpacking boxes in the sporting goods section.

Customers--not employees--are buying entire pallets of ammo. They are probably local dealers who buy at Walmart prices and put in on their shelves at double the price. I have seen it even in my small town. Free enterprise. If we don't like the price, we shouldn't pay it.

EDIT: Many WMs have different policies. My brother says WMs in Scottsdale, AZ don't even sell ammo.

Every WM around me has a strict 6 box limit per customer/per day. I've been every day for the last two weeks and I'll continue to go until either I run out of money or they run out of ammo, (In my case it's 9mm Blazer Brass for $8.98 per box)

If I were a gun dealer, I would be Dutch Auctioning all the ammo I could get in.

The last 3 times I've been in the local gun store, they've got every handgun, rifle, shotgun you could possibly want. Including a dozen black rifles. I think they've hit saturation on guns. They had adequate supplies of ammo but prices were sky high. The only thing in short supply was 380. They had one box for $35. I said no thanks. They even had a pallet of 5.56.

I've been trying to get more high capacity, 20 rd, mags for my FN Five-seveN pistol. I finally bought 3 more for about 300$ a piece, but they came with a free pistol.

I just bought 5 boxes of Blazer Brass .45 acp and it ran me $100 OTD and I was glad to even find it...Those days of $9 boxes from WW are a distant dream around these parts...

I stopped today and got a bar of warm water wax for my gun. A 9'-6" triple stinger long board. They had plenty of wax...

I can see his point but you feel left out pretty quick. I saw a Sig 232 (380) two months ago at the gun range and told the owner, I'll buy it if you have a box of ammo for it. Low and Behold, he reached down under the cabinet and pulled one box out. He said it is hard to sell a pistol if you have no ammo for it.

I just took my 10 five seven 20 rd mags and enlarged them to 30 rounders

I just snapped those pics really quick as I am not familiar with those calibers.

The 9mm he had behind the counter and it was less than 10 boxes and he went as so far as to bust some of them open and put 10 rounds in plastic baggies (I sh!t you not)

Come to to think of it THAT is what I should have taken a picture of.:banghead::banghead:

Good idea. In the least they should raise the price until they are able to keep something on the shelves. No reason to sell themselves short with below market prices.
